Plant labels and marking — why pencil, not marker

Reading in: English Original (PL)
In short: Three weeks after sowing all seedlings look the same. A label with date and variety is one of the simpler improvements that changes garden management.
Plant labels and marking — why pencil, not marker

Labels — simple thing, big gains

I sowed without labels for two seasons. Result: mixed seedlings, forgotten varieties, pricking out at the wrong time.

What to write:

  • Species and variety (e.g., Tomato — San Marzano)
  • Sowing date

    Materials:

    Plastic labels + pencil:
Most durable. Pencil doesn't fade in the sun (markers fade after 4–6 weeks). Reusable.

    Wooden sticks + pencil:
    Eco-friendly, 1–2 seasons.

    Why pencil, not marker:
HB or 2B on plastic lasts for years. Most markers — weeks.

    Additional benefit:
At the end of the season you know what grew where — the basis for crop rotation planning.
