Sandy soil — how to retain water and nutrients in it
Sandy soil — the opposite of clay
Sandy soil doesn't form a ball in your hand — it crumbles. Water flows through it like a sieve, nutrients wash out with every rainfall. Plants are constantly thirsty and hungry.
What improves water and nutrient retention:
1. Compost — absolute priority
Organic matter acts like a sponge. Apply generously: 4 inches of compost mixed with the top layer of soil every spring. Results are visible after just one season — sandy soil responds faster than clay.
2. Organic mulch
More important with sand than with any other soil type. Drastically reduces evaporation from the surface.
3. Biochar
Finely ground charred wood — fantastic at holding water and nutrients for years. Costs more, but the effect lasts for years.
Fertilizing sandy soil:
Apply smaller doses more frequently instead of one large application — which will wash out with the first rain. Slow-release fertilizer works best.
Good news: Sandy soil responds to amendments quickly — compost effects are visible after just one season, unlike clay soil.
