Deep infrequent watering vs. shallow frequent watering
Kort samengevat: Daily watering with small amounts creates a shallow root system and makes plants dependent on constant moisture. Infrequent but abundant watering builds deep roots and drought-resistant plants.
Deep infrequent vs. shallow frequent — there's one better choice
Daily watering with small amounts of water looks like care. In practice, it damages the plant long-term.
What happens with shallow watering:
Water moistens only the top 5 cm of soil. Roots go where the water is — which means shallow. The plant becomes completely dependent on your daily visits with the watering can. One missed day in heat = stress. A week's vacation = disaster.
What happens with deep watering:
Abundant water reaches 15–20 cm deep. Roots grow downward searching for moisture. The plant builds a deep, extensive root system. Access to water and nutrients from deeper layers. Resistance to short droughts.
How to water deeply:
- Water slowly and for a long time — give water time to soak in instead of running off the surface
- Check after watering by inserting your finger 10–15 cm deep — did the water reach there?
- Wait until the top layer of soil dries before watering again
Approximate frequency for ground vegetables:
- Spring and fall: every 3–5 days
- Summer without rain: every 2–3 days abundantly
- Never daily with small amounts
