Hardening Seedlings — 10 Days That Decide the Entire Season
In short: Seedlings grown in warmth are planted in the garden and experience thermal shock. Hardening over 7–14 days gradually acclimates plants to outdoor conditions and saves the first weeks after planting.
Hardening Seedlings — The Most Commonly Skipped Step
A plant lives its entire life at 22°C. Suddenly: 10°C, wind, direct sun. Thermal and mechanical shock all at once.
10-Day Plan:
- Day 1–2: 1–2h in shade, no wind, min. 10°C
- Day 3–4: 3–4h, gentle sun, wind protection
- Day 5–6: 5–6h, full sun, wind exposure
- Day 7–8: full day outside, night indoors
- Day 9–10: overnight outside
What speeds it up: open window near seedlings, gentle brushing with your hand.
What to avoid: don't expose to full sun immediately — leaf burn is irreversible.
