Garden Tool Maintenance — 20 Minutes at the End of the Season

Tool Maintenance — A 20-Minute Investment

A good forged spade costs £80–160. Well-maintained, it serves 20–30 years. Neglected, it rusts after 3 seasons.

Daily (2 minutes):

  • Shake soil off metal parts
  • Dry wet tools thoroughly

Once a year before winter storage:

    Spade, fork, hoe:

    1. Remove rust with sandpaper or wire brush
    2. Sharpen with a file — spade should be sharp
    3. Wipe with oil (linseed, machine oil)
    4. Oil wooden handle with linseed oil

      Secateurs:

    5. Clean resin with acetone
    6. Sharpen with fine file at an angle
    7. Drop machine oil on the joint

Storage: Long tools upright or on hooks. Dry location.
