Aphids — how to identify and get rid of them without chemicals
Aphids — quick diagnosis and effective chemical-free control
Small, soft, green or black. They feed in colonies on young shoots, deform leaves and transmit viruses. Aphids can destroy seedlings within a week.
How to identify:
- Clusters of small insects on shoot tips and undersides of leaves
- Curled, sticky or deformed young leaves
- Sticky honeydew on leaves and stems (aphid excretions)
- Ants running on the plant — they farm aphids for this honeydew
Natural control methods:
1. Soapy water (cheapest and fastest)
Dissolve a tablespoon of gray soap or dish soap in a liter of water. Spray thoroughly, especially leaf undersides. Repeat every 3–4 days for 2 weeks. Soap destroys the aphid's waxy coating.2. Nettle extract
Pour water over fresh nettles (1:10), soak for 24 hours. Dilute 1:5 and spray plants. Deters aphids and strengthens plants.3. Natural enemies
Ladybugs, lacewings, hoverfly larvae — one adult ladybug eats 50–100 aphids daily. Planting dill, fennel and flowering herbs attracts predators.4. Strong water stream
Washes aphids off mechanically. Simple and effective with moderate infestations.Prevention:
Avoid nitrogen over-fertilization — it causes lush, soft growth that aphids love.zielnamanufaktura.pl
