Calculate sowing date backwards from last frosts
In short: Every plant needs a specific number of weeks of growth before transplanting to the ground. Calculate the sowing date backwards from the last frosts in your region — don't sow when it's convenient for you.
Calculate sowing date — backwards from frosts
You sit down to sow in February because you feel it's time. This is a mistake that costs the entire season.
Approximate dates of last frosts in Poland:
- Central Poland: May 1–10
- South (lowlands): April 15–20
- Bieszczady, Sudety, Tatry: even May 20–25
- Warmia and Mazury: May 10–15
Seedling growth times before transplanting:
- Tomato: 6–8 weeks
- Pepper: 8–10 weeks
- Celeriac: 10–12 weeks
- Cucumber, pumpkin, zucchini: 3–4 weeks
- Early cabbage: 5–6 weeks
- Lettuce: 4–5 weeks
Example: Last frosts May 5 + tomato (7 weeks) = sowing March 17–19. Not in February.
