Watering during heat waves — what never to do

En bref: Heat waves and common watering mistakes can ruin the season in just a few days. Cold water on hot roots, watering at noon, sudden flooding after drought — each of these mistakes has serious consequences.
Watering during heat waves — what never to do

Watering in heat — rules worth following

When temperature exceeds 30°C plants enter survival mode. Your actions can help or cause serious damage.

What to absolutely avoid:

1. Cold tap water directly on heated roots
Temperature difference shocks the root system. Use settled water or from a rain barrel — it has ambient temperature.

2. Watering leaves in full sun
Always water at the roots. Water droplets on leaves in full sun can act like miniature focusing lenses.

3. Watering small amounts daily
Small doses only moisten surface roots. Plants become shallow-rooted and more susceptible to drought. Water less frequently but very abundantly — water should reach 15–20 cm deep.

4. Suddenly flooding plants after 2–3 days of water stress
Can cause fruit cracking (tomatoes, peppers) or root shock. After prolonged drought, water moderately for 2–3 days.

What to do:

  • Water early morning or after 6:00 PM
  • Water at ambient temperature
  • Abundantly and less frequently instead of little but daily
  • Mulch the soil — retains moisture and lowers root temperature
