Balcony in hot weather — different rules than the garden

A balcony pot is a completely different story than a garden bed. Small soil volume + strong sun exposure on the terrace or balcony = soil can dry out completely in 4–6 hours.

How often to water the balcony in hot weather:

• Small pots (under 20 cm): often twice a day — morning and after 6:00 PM
• Medium boxes (20–30 cm): once a day in the morning, check in the evening
• Large containers (over 40 cm): once a day in the morning is usually enough

  How to reduce the need for watering:

  1. Soil with hydrogel addition — absorbs water and releases it gradually. Chopped hydrogel mixed with soil can reduce watering needs by 30–50%.
  2. Water saucers — for large containers, self-watering saucers provide a reserve for several days
  3. Bark mulch on top of the pot — reduces evaporation
  4. Agrotextile under the pot on hot concrete — protects against root overheating

     Sign that you watered too late:
     Completely dry soil has shrunk away from the pot walls — water runs down the sides without soaking in. Submerge the entire pot in a bowl of water for 20 minutes.
