Brassicas under attack — the most dangerous pests
Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts — the entire Brassicaceae family has many enemies. It's worth knowing them before they eat your vegetables.
Cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae):
- Green or brown caterpillars up to 4 cm hiding inside the head
- Feed at night, during the day hidden under leaves or in soil
- Treatment: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) — biological preparation, harmless to humans and animals
Cabbage white butterfly:
- Yellow-green caterpillars with black spots on leaves
- Visible to the naked eye, hand picking is effective
- Butterfly nets or row covers as a barrier
Cabbage root fly (Delia radicum):
- White larvae destroying roots — plant wilts for no apparent reason
- Lift the plant: you'll find larvae around the root collar
- Protection: mats or discs made of fleece around the stem block egg laying
Preventive methods:
- Nets or row covers — most effective protection against all moths
- Crop rotation — don't plant brassicas in the same place year after year
- Companion planting with dill, celery, aromatic herbs — repel pests
