Seed viability test on paper towel
In short: Old seeds lose their ability to germinate. Moist paper towel + 10 seeds + one week = you know what percentage is suitable for sowing, before you waste the whole season.
Seed viability test — 10 minutes that save the season
How to perform the test:
- Moist paper towel (lightly squeezed)
- 10 seeds on one half
- Fold the other half over the seeds
- Close in a plastic bag
- Warm place (~20–25°C) for 5–14 days
- Count how many germinated
Interpretation:
- 9–10/10 — sow normally
- 7–8/10 — sow denser
- 5–6/10 — sow twice as much
- Below 5/10 — time for new seeds
Seed viability:
- Tomato, pepper, cucumber: 3–4 years
- Carrot, parsley: 2–3 years
- Onion, leek: 1–2 years
- Pumpkin, zucchini: 4–5 years
Storage: dry, cool, dark. Small jar in the refrigerator.
