Vermicomposting — balcony gardening gold

Do you live in an apartment, have a balcony or windowsill, and want to turn kitchen scraps into fertilizer instead of throwing them in the trash? A worm composter is for you.

What is a worm composter:
A multi-level plastic container with composting worms (species Eisenia fetida — not regular garden worms). They process organic scraps in 2–3 months into vermicompost — a fertilizer qualitatively better than regular compost.

How to start:

  1. Buy a ready-made worm composter or make one from two plastic containers
  2. Order worms online — 500g to start (about 30–50 PLN)
  3. Prepare bedding for worms: wet cardboard + leaves + a bit of soil
  4. Add scraps in thin layers every 2–3 days

What you can feed: Vegetable and fruit peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, bread scraps in small amounts.

What to avoid: Meat, fish, dairy; onions and garlic in large amounts; excess citrus; cooked dishes.

Where to keep: 15–25°C, without direct sunlight. Balcony in summer, kitchen or basement in winter.

What you get: Dark, earthy vermicompost for pots and beds + worm tea (liquid runoff) diluted 1:10 makes an excellent liquid fertilizer.
