In short: The end of the outdoor season doesn't have to mean the end of fresh herbs. Rosemary, thyme, mint and chives can be brought indoors and enjoyed throughout the winter.
Herbs in winter indoors — which ones to bring in and how to keep them alive

Herbs in winter indoors — which ones and how

Which will survive winter indoors:

  • Rosemary — requires a cool and bright location (10–15°C). Dry air near radiators = enemy number one
  • Thyme — similarly: cool and bright conditions
  • Mint — sleeps in winter (natural cycle) or grows slowly in warmth
  • Chives — can be brought in and "awakened" indoors
  • Basil — won't overwinter, but you can sow fresh every 6–8 weeks

    How to bring them in:

    1. Repot into clean containers with fresh soil before frosts
    2. Leave 2–3 weeks outside in partial shade — acclimatization to less light
    3. Move to the brightest window (south or east facing)

      Common winter problems:

    4. Dry air near radiators — mist leaves or place a water dish nearby
    5. Insufficient light — LED grow light for north-facing windows
    6. Overwatering — plants grow slower in winter, water less frequently
