Rain barrel — 200 liters for free with every rainfall

Reading in: English Original (PL)
In short: Rainwater is soft, chlorine-free and warmer than tap water — plants prefer it. A barrel under the gutter costs 80–150 zloty and pays for itself through entire seasons of water savings.

Rain barrel — an investment that pays off for years

Gardening wisdom: rainwater is better for plants than tap water. It contains no chlorine (which destroys soil microorganisms), is soft (doesn't deposit scale in drip systems) and is at ambient temperature.

The simplest system:

  1. Plastic garden barrel 200–500 liters with tap at the base
  2. Gutter diverter with drainage to the barrel (several dozen zloty)
  3. Screen at the inlet — protects against leaves and mosquitoes

    Where to place it:
On an elevation (bricks, wooden pallet) — gravity makes it easier to connect a drip hose or fill a watering can. Close to beds you water most frequently.

How much water will you collect:
From a 50 m² roof with just 10 mm of rainfall = 500 liters! A 200 L barrel overflows multiple times per season.

    Automatic diversion:
Good systems automatically divert excess water back to the gutter when the barrel is full.

    Legal aspect:
Collecting rainwater on your own plot in Poland is fully legal. Barrels require no permits.

    Bonus:
Barrel next to greenhouse or polytunnel = gravity-fed drip irrigation without electricity and without a tap.
