Companion planting — what to grow together for better yields

Companion planting — classic combinations

Three Sisters trio:
Corn + pole beans + pumpkin

  • Corn: support pole for beans
  • Beans: nitrogen to the soil
  • Pumpkin: living mulch, retains moisture

    Tomato + basil + marigold:

  • Basil confuses aphids
  • Marigold deters soil nematodes

    Carrot + onion:
Carrot fly doesn't like the smell of onions and vice versa — mutual protection.

    Cabbage + dill:
    Intense aroma confuses cabbage pests.

    What to avoid:

  • Onion and garlic near beans and peas — inhibit growth of legumes
  • Fennel with practically everything — strongly allelopathic
