Annuals vs perennials — how to build a permanent garden framework

Reading in: English Original (PL)
In short: A garden composed only of annual vegetables requires starting from scratch every year. A few strategically planted perennials create a permanent framework that returns on its own.
Annuals vs perennials — how to build a permanent garden framework

Annuals and perennials — how to combine them

Perennial plants in the vegetable-herb garden:

  • Chives — sow once, returns every year for decades
  • Horseradish — plant once, then just harvest
  • Tarragon — winters without care
  • Thyme — perennial in the right location
  • Asparagus — 3 years of investment, then 15–20 years of harvests
  • Rhubarb — easy, returns every year
  • Strawberries — renewal every 3–4 years, but they return

    How to plan perennials:
Give them a permanent spot that doesn't interfere with rotation — edge of the bed, separate border, garden edge.

Mistake: Planting perennials in the middle of vegetable beds. They block rotation and make work difficult.
