10 herbs worth having

The easiest — for everyone:

  1. Chives — perennial, indestructible, self-regenerating
  2. Mint — aggressive, plant in a container! But indestructible
  3. Thyme — drought-resistant, perennial in a good location
  4. Oregano — practically maintenance-free, spreads readily
  5. Sorrel — perennial, early in spring when nothing else is available

Slightly demanding, but worth the effort:

  6. Basil — requires warmth and sun, annual
  7. Dill — self-seeding, doesn't like transplanting
  8. Parsley — biennial, easy, overwinters
  9. Lovage — perennial, irreplaceable for soups
  10. Rosemary — perennial in a good location, requires drainage

Rule: Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano) like: sun, dry and well-draining soil, infrequent watering. Central European herbs (parsley, dill, lovage): moister soil, tolerate light shade.
